Biography

After obtaining a 1st Price D. Agostini Drum School in Paris in 1987, OLIVIER Le GOAS began to play in trio with guitarist ERIC LOHRER, and bassist LAURENT CAMUZAT, with whom he toured intensely and won the 2nd price of orchestra at the 1988 Defense Jazz Competition, and paralelly with the Big Band «What's new Doctor», the Big Band «Lumière» of the pianist LAURENT CUGNY, the bassist JEAN-FRANCOIS JENNY-CLARK, the pianist BENOIT DELBECQ, then joined the group MAHORI with guitarist DAVID CHEVALLIER, and quintet of pianist Jean-Michel PILC. In 1995, he participated in the Jazz Worshop at the Banff Center (CANADA), where he met the buglist trumpeter and composer KENNY WHEELER with whom he recorded 14 years later the album "SUR LES CORPS DES KLAXONS" published on the REWIND RECORD label ( RR1001). In 2003 he was awarded a LAVOISIER scholarship for French students abroad (Ministry of Foreign Affairs / EGIDE), and went to study in New York in the department of jazz and contemporary music program at New School University (2003 ), where he follows the teachings among others of the trumpet player Charles Tolliver, the pianist Peter Zak, the composer Kurt Nuroc, the drummers Jeff Ballard and Eric McPherson.

A skilled drummer with a strong command of polyrhythms and complex meters, Olivier Le Goas is also an accomplished composer with a gift for pleasing harmonies and memorable melodies. The veteran French bandleader showcased his abundant gifts on 2016’s acclaimed album Reciprocity, which was hailed in a 4-1/2 star Downbeat review for its “appealing sound that has one foot in chamber-like formalism while also exploring heightened realms of improvisation”.
